The visual project is aimed at empowering individuals in the community who are visually impaired by providing them with white canes (walking sticks). This is our second visual aid project in partnership with Ayudh, an international youth movement that seeks to empower young people to make social and political change.
For this project, we compiled a list of 88 potential beneficiaries in collaboration with Kenya Institute for The Blind (KIB). As per our process, we made sure to call each of the beneficiaries to ensure their phone numbers were in service as well as inform them of the project and the location and time we hope to execute the project. During the call, we also made sure to confirm their height as the white canes must be specific to the person’s height.
The project took place on the 19th of February 2022 at Kenya Society for The Blind (KSB) from 9AM to 12PM. A few of the beneficiaries were unable to make it for the project and asked us to either leave the canes at KIB or give it to a relative that they’ll send to collect on their behalf.
After distributing the canes with the help of KSB staff, we ensured each of the beneficiaries was comfortable with the white stick and knew how to use and handle it. For those who didn’t, we made sure to do a demonstration to help them understand how to use the cane.
Overall, the project was a huge success and we’re grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community at this capacity. We have pictures and videos on our social media platforms (Instagram & Twitter) @jaorelief
